Why Irish Companies Can't Find Senior Data Engineers and How to Fix It

If you're a Head of Data, CTO, or Engineering Director in Ireland and you've spent the last few months trying to hire a Senior Data Engineer you're not doing it wrong. The market is genuinely difficult right now. Here's an honest breakdown of why it's so hard, and what the companies successfully making hires are doing differently.

The Supply Problem Is Real

Ireland's data engineering talent pool is smaller than most hiring managers expect. The country has an outsized concentration of tech companies relative to its population European HQs, global financial services operations, and fast-growing indigenous tech firms are all competing for the same 2,000–3,000 active senior data engineering contractors in the market.

The specific skills that are most in demand production-grade dbt, Azure Databricks, lakehouse architecture are relatively recent additions to the standard engineering toolkit. Most Senior Data Engineers with these skills have 5–8 years of experience, which means they entered the workforce at exactly the point these tools were emerging. There simply hasn't been enough time to develop a deep bench of talent.

JM Data Talent's placement data shows that Senior Data Engineers with Azure + dbt + Databricks experience receive multiple approaches per week. If your process takes more than 3 weeks from first contact to offer, you will lose candidates.

The 5 Reasons Your Search Is Stalling

1. Your Job Description Is Written for a Permanent Role

Contract briefs that read like permanent job descriptions heavy on culture fit, long on 'must be passionate about data', short on specific technical requirements — don't attract senior contractors. Senior contractors are scanning for: the tech stack, the scope of work, the day rate, and the start date. If those four things aren't immediately clear, they move on.

Fix it: write the brief like a Statement of Work. Lead with the problem you need solved, the stack they'll work in, and the engagement terms. Keep the culture section brief contractors care about the work, not the ping-pong table.

2. Your Rate Is Below Market

The most common reason good contractors don't apply is rate. Many companies set their contractor day rate based on what they paid 18 months ago, or based on a benchmark from a generalist salary survey that doesn't reflect specialist contract market dynamics.

Role

Market Rate (2026)

Where Clients Often Land

Data Engineer (Mid, Azure+dbt)

€400 – €500

Common mismatch: €320–€380

Data Engineer (Senior, Databricks)

€500 – €650

Common mismatch: €420–€480

Data Architect / Platform Lead

€700 – €950

Common mismatch: €550–€650

ML Engineer (Azure ML + LLM)

€600 – €800

Common mismatch: €480–€560

The gap between what companies budget and what the market requires has widened significantly in 2025–2026. If your rate is in the 'common mismatch' column, you won't attract the profiles you're looking for or you'll attract them and lose them at offer stage when they get a counter.

3. Your Interview Process Is Too Long

A four-stage interview process with a take-home technical test was designed for permanent hiring. Applied to contract recruitment, it eliminates the best candidates not because they can't do the work, but because another client made an offer after two conversations.

The companies making the fastest hires in Ireland right now run a maximum two-stage process: a 30-minute technical screen with a senior engineer, followed by a 45-minute conversation with the hiring manager. Total elapsed time: 5–7 working days. That's what you're competing against.

4. You're Only Reaching Active Candidates

The best Senior Data Engineers in Ireland are rarely on job boards. They're either mid-contract with a clear extension path, or they're between contracts for only 1–2 weeks before being placed. If your search strategy is 'post on LinkedIn Jobs and wait', you're only reaching the subset of the market that is actively looking and not being approached by specialist recruiters.

Access to passive candidates people who aren't actively looking but would consider the right opportunity requires relationships built over time. This is where a specialist recruiter with a warm network pays for itself.

5. You're Asking for Too Much

A common pattern in Irish data engineering briefs: the client wants a Senior Data Engineer who can also act as Data Architect, own the roadmap, mentor two junior engineers, and ideally have experience in both Azure and AWS. At a day rate budgeted for a mid-level engineer.

Overly broad requirements signal to experienced contractors that the client doesn't have a clear picture of what they need and experienced contractors avoid ambiguous engagements. Be specific about the primary deliverable and let the rest emerge from the engagement.

What Successful Clients Do Differently

The companies that consistently make strong hires in this market share a few common practices:

•   They engage a specialist recruiter early not as a last resort after a failed direct search. The first two to four weeks of a search matter most; that's when passive candidates are being approached and the market is forming an impression of the role.

•   They move fast on good candidates. When a strong CV comes in, the hiring manager reviews it within 24 hours and a first call is booked within 48. Delays of 3–5 days to acknowledge a CV mean the candidate has often had two conversations elsewhere.

•   They are transparent about rate early in the process. Disclosing the day rate in the brief (or at the first conversation) saves time for everyone and signals respect for the contractor's time.

•   They define the primary deliverable clearly — 'migrate our on-prem SQL Server pipelines to Azure Data Factory and build a dbt transformation layer on top' is a better brief than 'support the data team with various engineering tasks'.

•   They treat contractors as senior professionals, not interchangeable resources. The best contractors have options; the companies they choose are the ones who engaged them thoughtfully.

The Case for Specialist Recruitment

Generalist recruitment agencies rarely have warm relationships with senior data engineering contractors. Data engineering is a small, specialist community in Ireland — the same 50–100 senior contractors appear repeatedly across the major financial services and tech engagements. Access to these individuals requires sector-specific relationships maintained over years, not a LinkedIn Recruiter seat.

JM Data Talent works exclusively in Data, Analytics, and AI contract talent in Ireland. We maintain active relationships with the senior engineers who are between contracts, considering their next move, or open to hearing about the right opportunity. Our average time-to-shortlist for Senior Data Engineer roles is 5 working days.
